ENERGY FLOWS ON ARTISTS CANVAS Karen Lorena Parker brings nature to life through visual arts

Michelle Hopkins, Richmond News Published: Tuesday, August 28, 2007

There's a beautiful breeze flowing through Karen Lorena Parker's Burkeville home.

That same sense of movement is evident in the artist's large landscape canvases that adorn just about every wall -- trees swaying in a summer breeze, clouds moving in the sky.

Parker has also captured the night in swirling, flowing lines that appear to be rustling in a gentle, wavy movement. Karen Lorena Parker recently dedicated one of her large acrylic paintings called Dan McIvor's Martin Mars to Richmond Fire-Rescue. The work is a tribute to McIvor (1911 - 2005), known as the father of the water bomber.

There's a palpable energy going on in her paintings.

"I want the energy to come through, the flowers moving in the wind or the storm clouds shifting," Parker says...

Dan McIvor Martin Mars

Dan McIvor Martin Mars:

Dan McIvor, an senior Burkeville resident passed away at 94, after being awarded the Order of Canada in 2003 during the Kelowna Fires. His determination and ingenuity made the Martin Mars a "Water Bomber" when planes were just firespotters.

From Burkeville to Kelowna the pleasant-ville spirit has not changed since the Sea Island Community began with employees from the Boeing Plant in the 50s. Home to over 300 residents; most of whom had the pleasure of knowing Dan McIvor and his contribution to the neighborhood.

Donated to the Sea Island #4 Firehall in Burkeville. May this piece be a reminder of what great things come from those with curious minds and the perseverance to make ideas real.

Capturing the mood of light, and the true gestural essence of my subject
is the challenge that inspires me to paint — Karen Lorena Parker

Born in Chile, Karen Lorena Parker grew up in Calgary, resides in Richmond and shows
internationally. Graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design (1994), represented in Vancouver, New YorkAgora Gallery New York, Art-Mine New York, (Ontario and Arizona soon). Distributed by Canadian Art Prints and Casa Publishing.

Inspired by the Group of Seven and their illustrative sense of design and composition, her Canadian vision is luminescent and well planned. She finds beauty in the collective memory, the romantic places we have all been. Her atmospheric paintings of west coast landscapes, contemporary florals or aviation capturr the viewer emotionally. Her technical interest in painting is expressed in many subjects as she pursues the beauty of light, and gestural expression of our romantic memories.

Her contemporary work is graphic, expressive, with depth and range. Moody skies in bold quiet tones contrast colorful whimsical settings of backlit trees under layers of varnish. Her careers in art direction, graphic design and illustration inform her work with pop culture, trends and the needs of the viewer. Her personable and prolific style has made her a favorite west coast artist. She teaches her impressionistic style in private workshops, contributes to charities, and is a member of the national arts group Night of Artists. Night of Artists.
