Dan McIvors Martin Mars

Dan McIvors Martin Mars:

Public Art, Sea Island #4 Firehall, Richmond BC.

Dan McIvor, an senior Burkeville resident passed away at 94, after being awarded the Order of Canada in 2003 during the Kelowna Fires. His determination and ingenuity made the Martin Mars a "Water Bomber" when planes were just firespotters.

From Burkeville to Kelowna the pleasant-ville spirit has not changed since the Sea Island Community began with employees from the Boeing Plant in the 50s. Home to over 300 residents; most of whom had the pleasure of knowing Dan McIvor and his contribution to the neighborhood.

Donated to the Sea Island #4 Firehall in Burkeville. May this piece be a reminder of what great things come from those with curious minds and the perseverance to make ideas real.

Water Bomber Visionary
Honoured in B.C.

By Adwen Welsie, Epoch Times Victoria Staff Sep 06, 2007

Back in the late 1950s, after British Columbia was badly hit by a series of large forest fires, lumber companies decided they needed bigger water bombers than the Otters, Beavers and Avengers in use at the time.

The only snag was that big flying boats were going out of vogue by then, and most had been sold for scrap. However, when pilot Dan McIvor heard that the U.S. Navy planned to sell its huge Martin Mars flying boats, which had been used during World War 11, he immediately set about obtaining them.

Although the Navy had sold their remaining four Martin Mars by the time McIvor found a buyer, the new owner, who had bought them for scrap, agreed to sell them to a consortium of B.C. forest companies—among them McIvor's employer McMillan Bloedel—for the remarkably generous sum of $100,000.

The aircraft were flown to B.C. in 1959, where they were converted and pressed into service as water bombers in the early 1960s.

With a 200 feet wingspan, the world's largest flying tankers can scoop up and hold 27,276 litres of water, which can be dropped from either the bottom or the side. They can also hold 2,216 litres of fire retardant foam concentrate. ...

Martin Mars Epoch Times:

Painting of Martin Mars makes splash in acrylic

Karen Lorena Parker paid tribute to former neighbour Dan McIvor's water bomber, which is fittingly now on display at the Sea Island fire hall.

When Burkeville artist Karen Lorena Parker first met her neighbour, Dan McIvor, he seemed like he was a nice enough man. But it wasn't until McIvor was named to the Order of Canada in 2003 that Parker realized McIvor's enormous contributions to the country. So when the aviation pioneer passed away in 2005, she thought it would be a fitting to memorialize the former volunteer firefighter's accomplishments on canvas.

"Dan McIvor was an incredible character and a wonderful person," said Parker.

The strength, determination and will to survive is what it means to be alive. As thin, scraggly trees face the challenge of growing through rock, their leaves dance in loose brushstrokes. As a visual statement of will, they manage to find nutrients high amongst the rocky cliffs.
